Install an acoustic partition

Install an acoustic partition

What objective?

The advantage of good sound insulation is to allow each member of the family to have their activities, even noisy, without disturbing others. Inside an apartment, noise pollution is mainly airborne noise, that is to say voices and music, impact noise (shocks) and equipment noise. With a suitably insulated partition, it is possible to work in a room with barely hearing the music or the sound of a television set coming from the neighboring room (the voices are audible but unintelligible).

Adequate insulation

Not all conventional thermal insulation has good acoustic performance. Cellular foams, for example, are generally too rigid and do not allow air to play its role - essential in this area of insulation. Glass wool manufacturers offer thin and long fiber panels (such as Panolene acoustic, from Isover) designed for acoustic protection and used for lining light partitions with plasterboard on metal frames.

Installation of pipes

You can embed the electrical or water pipes in the partition. It is necessary to offset, from one facing to another, the outlet of the pipes and therefore the position of the switches and sockets, in order to avoid acoustic bridges. Shift them 20 cm horizontally and 10 cm vertically.

What noise ?

Acoustic insulation professionals distinguish different types of noise and work to find the best protection in each case.
Equipment noise: washing machine, dishwasher, fridge, boiler, etc.
Impact noise: shocks of all types (transmitted mainly by the ground).
External noise: the most important is road traffic, but there is also the noise of works, planes, trains ...
Indoor air noise: voice and music (television, radio conversations). The sound level is expressed in dB (A), that is to say in decibels heard by the ear. Ambient noise is the noise level of our environment; to be acceptable, it must be in the range of 25 to 35 dB (A). Noise is considered disturbing when its noise level exceeds ambient noise by 5 dB (A) during the day and 3 dB (A) at night.

Acoustic comfort

The equipment of the apartment is often a noise nuisance factor: do not forget to take into account the noise level of a washing machine or a boiler at the time of purchase.
To find the right answers, identify the noises that bother you. If it is (mainly) interior noise, give preference to the sound insulation of the partitions; in the case of exterior noise, the insulation must cover the entire house, in particular areas with little or no insulation, such as doors, windows and walls. The interior noises are also diffused by the side walls: an insulation of these therefore completes the acoustic comfort.
The arrangement of the decoration also play their role: in a tiled room, with bare walls and comprising only a few pieces of furniture, the sound reverberation can be annoying; on the other hand, carpets, draperies and curtains significantly reduce this reverberation.
