Choosing the right furniture under sink or basin

We choose bathroom furniture according to many criteria: budget, of course, but also the space we have, our storage needs and the configuration of the room. Let's start with the water points: in addition to the shower and / or the bathtub, we have to create a corner to wash off! If your bathroom already has a sink and you want to keep it, nothing prevents you from dressing its column of a cabinet under sink with some storage. Level dimensions, it should not be deeper than the sink. If you have the choice, choose a built-in or countertop basin. The latter has been very trendy in recent years: the essential element of a designer bathroom!

© Leroy Merlin What material should you choose for your washbasin? Granite and marble are elegant and very resistant, but also very heavy, and expensive. Sandstone is more accessible but a little less resistant. Corian (composite material, mixture of mineral fillers and acrylic resin) is light and very robust, but expensive. The resin also holds up well, for a much lower price. Finally, there is ceramic, a good quality / price ratio. Have you found your sink? Okay, but which piece of furniture are you going to install it on? Almost anything is possible. A simple vanity top is very aesthetic, in addition to freeing up floor space, but deprives you of storage space. Now you may need cupboards and drawers where you can put towels, hygiene and beauty products ... What dimensions should you provide? In width, between 60 and 90 cm for a single sink cabinet, and between 120 and 135 cm for a double sink cabinet. If you have the space, this last solution is more user-friendly, especially if there are a lot of inhabitants in the house! Budget level, there is something for all budgets. You can even retype an old chest of drawers or a desk in a vanity unit: you just have to drill the right holes and waterproof it well!

The bathroom set, a good idea?

Furniture brands often offer "ready to install" bathroom sets. Their price is advantageous, but beware of several things: the quality of the furniture (the chipboard is for example not very resistant) and their adequacy to your needs! Indeed, no need to buy a bathroom cabinet if you do not have the space to install it at home ... And be aware that the day you want to change an item, you will have to change all the furniture, and review all the layout of your bathroom! For more modularity, you can buy your furniture separately. If you prefer to bet on harmony, a bathroom set will suit you! Finally, be aware that there are other solutions to furnish your bathroom with a small budget ... But we will come back to this.

Storage column and tall unit for a small bathroom

There are many interiors with a small bathroom. The organization of space is a major issue there. To get everything in, you have to be tricky! Take your measurements carefully and feel free to draw a bathroom plan. Plan for the necessary clearance to open the cupboards and drawers, but also the movements in the room. For example, keep at least 70 cm in front of a sink or shower, and one meter in front of a bathtub. Level storage, the bathroom column, long but narrow, is the ally of small rooms. The size is minimal compared to the possibilities it offers! Keep the toiletries at the same level as the users, while you store the bath linen on the lowest shelf. You can choose to hang or hang. But even if it is on feet, it is better to fix it for more stability: two fixing lugs at the top of the furniture are very easy to install and avoid any accident. In this case, your column will still nibble a little space on the ground. Do not multiply furniture that reduces the useful area in a small room, or you could quickly have a feeling of confinement. Suspended, it frees up floor space while making cleaning easier. Open, the column is practical, but a little less aesthetic. To reserve for objects you need daily, or even several times a day (toothbrush, hairbrush, moisturizer, etc.) Closed, it is more expensive, but you can install a mirror on the door to win space. In all cases, the tall unit is ideal for small areas: we optimize the space by investing the walls for storage. In short, for a smart bathroom layout, take the height!

Bathroom cabinet and low cabinet, for those who have more space!

If you have a little more space, you can move to a bathroom cabinet, ideal for storing everything in one place! Some low sideboards like buffet dressers… have their place. They welcome your "reserves", these objects and products that you store: towels, bath mats, shampoos and shower gels in advance ... Equipped with casters, the base unit is mobile according to your needs. The most robust can even be used as a seat! The rest of the time, you will put it in a corner of the room or under a higher piece of furniture. Always allow space for opening cupboards and drawers.

Which material should be used in damp rooms?

The shape of the furniture is one thing, but the material? There are three main categories: * Melamine or particle board: inexpensive, it is the least resistant of materials. It is made from agglomerated wood particles, glued and covered with laminate whose color, texture and finish vary enormously (walnut, beech, wenge, satin, metallic…). Bathroom sets are often made of chipboard. It is a light material and easy to clean, but sensitive to humidity. Keep away from water points! * Medium (MDF): heavier and more resistant than melamine, it consists of wood fibers and a binder. It is more expensive to buy, but the finishes will be better. Medium as well as melamine can be cleaned very simply, with soapy water. * Natural wood: if wood is easier to stain, it is, on the other hand, the most solid material ... Provided it is well protected. Most bathroom furniture is made of exotic wood (teak, eucalyptus, bamboo, mahogany, etc.), which can withstand humidity better than other species. However, it is better to oil it, and varnish it if it is fir or pine. When buying your furniture, preferably look for the FSC or PEFC labels which guarantee wood from sustainably managed forests. Exotic woods can be cleaned with soapy water and a brush. Otherwise, lightly sand the stain and oil the furniture again.
